Activity
gManagement of sustainable mountain environmenth
-Conservation of living space in mountain area
(Protect the living space from erosion and sedimentation disasters)
-Conservation of nature of mountains
(Conserve the mountain for sustainable use of natural resources such as water, forest and soil)
Main Research field: Tohoku region of Japan Himalayan Mountains
-Development of a planning/designing method for disaster prevention and management of mountain environment by studying present and past geomorphic changes
Research topics:
1. Geo-ecological dynamics of forest environment and its origination from the debris movement on landslide slopes
¨Study on generation of forest with various plant species from great variety of topography formed by landslides (Shirakami Mountains)
¨ Bio-engineering study to find the appropriate preventive measures against landslides for geomorphic changes and forest environment
2. Erosion and sedimentation control measures applicable for the region by studying the present and past geomorphic changes of disaster area
¨ Propose reliable disaster mitigation measures for the developing countries where advanced investigation and costly measures are difficult to carry out.
Ex: Simple control measures of soil erosion and sedimentation by using natural resources from participatory approach in Himalayan country, Nepal
¨Status of sediment production in hilly watershed in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, mechanism of river bed expansion and their control measures
¨ Propose landslide control measures and risk assessment based on micro-topographic analysis: Determine the evolution process of landslide by considering the micro-topography and internal structure of landslides, and apply it for preventive measures.
¨Monitoring of debris movement in devastated mountain slopes of Tohoku (Japan) under sub-alpine climate such
as heavy snow, cold and windy climate, and propose rehabilitation measures for
those regions.
¨ Advices on erosion and sedimentation disaster rehabilitation
3. Hazard
management of earthquake-induced landslides
¨ Hazard zonation based on geological and geomorphological setting
¨Mechanism of large-scale landslides
